2003–2005:

At the age of 12, Michael Lewis began his racing career in 1/4 midgets. He raced 1/4 midgets full time for three seasons winning numerous pole position awards, heat races, main events, and two championships in Senior Honda and Light 160 Honda. Michael also raced in various Light B division races and took a memorable win at Pomona Valley in the California Monza series.

2003-2005

2005 2005:

While continuing to race 1/4 midgets, Michael started racing go-karts on a part-time basis in 2005 with the Tri C Kart Club.

2006:

Michael committed full time to racing go-karts in the United States at the club, regional, and national levels. During the summer of 2006 Michael frequently raced in Europe at the junior level, participating in Rotax Challenge events at Parma and Jeselo, Italy.

2006

2007 2007:

Michael raced an average of 30 go-kart racing events in 2007. Michael went back to Italy to race with Dino Chiesa’s Zanardi Chiesa Corse team and participated in an Italian Open Masters event and in the French Open at Lyon.

2008:

Michael concentrated on his karting commitments both in the United States and in Europe. He won the championship for the Region 7 IKF TAG Class and finished 4th in the HPV-3 class. Michael’s success in the TAG class came with the help of Mike Manning and MMK. MMK provided a successful environment for Michael to win the Region 7 IKF TAG Championship and $2000 for first place in the TAG Pro Race at California Speedway.

Michael’s European racing schedule was expanded for 2008 as he  competed in most WSK kart events in the KF-2 class for Chiesa Corse. Michael also raced for Dino and his Zanardi karts in selected regional events and the European Championship.

In the winter of 2008, Michael began making the step up to full-sized cars. He tested in both a Ford Focus Midget and a Formula BMW car.

2008

2009 2009:

Michael competed in the full Formula BMW Americas championship and partially in the Formula BMW Pacific (Asia) championship with Antonio Ferrari's Eurointernational team. Also, Michael participated partially in the USAC Western States Ford Focus Midget championship with Kevin Gerhardt's Western Speed Racing team. In Formula BMW Americas, Michael won the Rookie Championship (awarded a substantial scholarship by BMW to race in 2010) and earned numerous podium finishes in the Americas and Pacific championships. Michael was fourth classified in the overall Formula BMW Americas championship. Highlights include 2nd place finishes at the Singapore Grand Prix and at Miller Motorsports Park.

When not racing Formula BMW Michael competed with Western Speed Racing. In his partial championship, Michael won 3 main events, numerous heat races/trophy dash events, and earned many pole positions in the USAC Western States Ford Focus Midget championship. Only racing a partial season, Michael still earned fourth classified in the drivers championship for the USAC Western States Ford Focus Midget cars.

2010:

Michael competed in the full Formula BMW Europe championship and partially in the Formula BMW Pacific championship with Antonio Ferrari's Eurointernational team. Michael scored numerous podiums in the Formula BMW Pacific championship. Highlights include three straight 2nd place finishes in Sepang, Malaysia. Michael also won 3 out of 4 races entered in the USAC Western States Ford Focus Midget championship in that same year.

2010

2011 2011:

Michael was crowned Rookie Champion & Vice Champion (2nd overall in championship) in the Formula 3 Italia series with Prema Powerteam. Michael nearly clinched the overall championship while leading the final race at Monza, Italy with a few kilometers remaining until his race ended in the crash barriers due to an unlikely event. However, with the great preparation from Prema Powerteam, Michael earned three victories (the most of any driver in the Formula 3 Italia championship), two pole positions, two fastest laps, and six total podiums.

As a result of his success in the Formula 3 Italia championship, Michael officially tested for Scuderia Ferrari F1 on November 15, 2011 at Vallelunga Circuit near Rome, Italy. Michael’s drive in the F60 Ferarri F1 Chassis marked the first time in nearly 30 years that an American had driven a Scuderia Ferrari F1 car in an official outing since Mario Andretti, who drove at Caesars Palace Grand Prix in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 25, 1982.
